Jayden Bonsu
School: St. Peters Prep (New Jersey).
Position: Safety.
Height, weight: 6-foot-1, 210 pounds.
247Sports rating: Four-star prospect rated the No. 24 safety, the No. 4 player in New Jersey and the No. 273 player in the country according to the 247Sports composite ratings.
Other offers: Alabama, Arkansas, Boston College, Buffalo, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, USC and Wisconsin.
What’s his deal?
The New Jersey native chose the Buckeyes following what was a summer of watching his momentum take him down a couple of roads. He was considered an OSU lean coming off of his June 17 official visit, but Miami made some strides in July and looked like it was ready to close. But Ohio State eventually fought off the Hurricanes — with Michigan State also getting a visit — to win out despite Bonsu moving his commitment date back twice He became the third safety in a class that hopes to add one more by signing day.
How he fits into Ohio State’s plans
Bonsu’s skill set suggests he’ll fit in as a Bandit in OSU’s three-safety defensive scheme. He’s a bigger player with the capability of doing both strong safety and Sam linebacker duties which is exactly what that role calls for. There also shouldn’t be a big learning curve for him since he comes from a similar scheme at the high school level playing for a pretty prominent program.
Projections for 2023
Sonny Styles’ name should probably be penciled into one of the starting safety positions next year as a true freshman who showed up a year earlier than expected, and carved out a small role on special teams and in certain packages this season. More than likely it’ll be the bandit role. But no one has claimed the role as his backup yet which is where Bonsu can spend the offseason doing so.
